FEDERATİON About

Honouring the Past, Shaping the Future

In May 1972, the USSR Committee for Physical Culture and Sports adopted a resolution on the development of judo across the Soviet Union. The document instructed the establishment of dedicated judo sections and the organisation of competitions in Azerbaijan as well. Judo quickly gained popularity in the country, and in the same year the Azerbaijan Judo Federation was established.

Aghayar Akhundzade became the first Azerbaijani specialist to be awarded the title of Honoured Coach of the USSR in 1992. Among Azerbaijani judoka, Sahib Ismayilov was the first to earn the title of Master of Sport, while Gudrat Panjaliyev became the first International Master of Sport. Among women, Arzu Atayeva was the first Master of Sport, and Gulshan Shirinova became the first International Master of Sport.

These successful traditions continued after Azerbaijan regained its independence.
