Azerbaijan Claims Five Medals at Junior European Judo Championships
The Azerbaijan national team delivered a successful performance at the Junior European Judo Championships in Podgorica, Montenegro, winning one gold and two bronze medals on the final day of the individual competition.
Suleyman Shukurov (-90 kg) defeated all his opponents to claim the gold medal. On his way to the final, the Azerbaijani judoka overcame opponents from France, Moldova, Ukraine and Russia before defeating Germany’s Konstantin Distel by ippon in the gold medal contest. This marked Shukurov’s second Junior European Championship title of his career.
Davud Namazli (-100 kg) and Ramazan Ahmadov (+100 kg) earned bronze medals. In their respective bronze medal contests, Namazli defeated Leonhard Fransens of the Netherlands, while Ahmadov overcame Montenegro’s Stefan Kovinic.
On the opening day of the championships, Aykhan Mirzazade (-60 kg) and Mahammad Musayev (-66 kg) had also been crowned Junior European champions.
Azerbaijan concluded the Junior European Championships with a total of five medals — three gold and two bronze. The national team finished second overall among 44 participating countries and took first place in the men’s standings.
