Azerbaijan Shine on Day One of Cadet European Championships
The opening day of the Cadet European Judo Championships in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain, proved highly successful for the Azerbaijan national team.
Azerbaijan finished the day with two gold, one silver and two bronze medals, taking first place in the team standings among 43 participating nations.
In the -40 kg category, Zahra Guliyeva was crowned European champion after defeating Hungary's Nora Pirbus-Grof by ippon in the final.
An all-Azerbaijani final took place in the boys' -50 kg category, where Nihad Aghayev defeated teammate Farid Rzazade to win the gold medal. Rzazade finished the competition with silver.
In the -55 kg category, Ibrahim Talibov claimed bronze by defeating Ukraine's Vitalii Lykhohliad in the bronze medal contest.
Konul Eyvazli (-48 kg) secured Azerbaijan's fifth medal of the day, overcoming Italy's Aurora Montalbano in the bronze medal contest to finish third.
The championships will continue until 2 July, with Azerbaijan set to compete in additional individual weight categories and the mixed team event.
