On 7 February, the first leg of the U-17 “Selection of Talents” judo tournament got underway.

The competition, held at the Sumgayit Olympic Sports Complex, brought together 314 athletes (270 boys, 44 girls) across 14 weight categories from 72 clubs and sports organisations.

On the opening day, 152 judoka competed in 7 weights. Girls fought in the -40 kg, -48 kg, -57 kg categories, while boys competed in the -50 kg, -60 kg, -73 kg and -90 kg divisions.

The aim of the “Selection of Talents” tournament is to build a strong base for the national team, identify promising candidates for the squad and form a sustainable reserve pool. According to the final ranking after both legs, the top four athletes in each weight category will be invited to the “Hopes of the Future” training programme.
